The stark, desolate, and barren landscape of the Icelandic highlands doubled for a post-apocalyptic American East Coast where major cities have been reduced to wasteland.
A film crew travelled to the summit of Haleakala (10,023 feet), Maui to capture moving clouyds to create the illusion that the Sky Tower set was sitting high above the clouds. Hale a ka la means "House of the Sun", word for word.
Jack Harper takes a break to admire the view and waters a flowe, sitting next to a 800-foot drop at the edge of Earl's Peak, which is only accessible by helicopter. The area is near the capital of Reyjavik.
The location is close to the world-renowned Icelandic waterfall called Gullfoss, which is briefly shown in the movie. Dettifoss, in Northern Iceland, is the most poweful waterfall in Europe. It is used in the 2012 movie Prometheus.
The 10,000-year-old crater known as Hrossaborg (Icelandic for “Horse City”), in the north-west, was turned into a post-apocalyptic football stadium where Jack Harper repairs a crashed drone. Digital effects were used to fill the barren landscape with stadium seats and a tunnel
entrance to the field.
Jack Harper builds idyllic forest retreat at Black's Pond in June Lake, Californnia, where he keeps his books and takes Julia to keep her safe. The beautiful sub-alpine lake is located about 5 miles south of the southern end of Mono Lake. No CGI there.
A set of part of the Empire State Building’s observation deck was shipped over from the US and erected in the Highlands region of the country.
