The King's College Gatehouse at Cambridge was digitally rendered in the background of the street scene in the begining of the movie. The only real objects in the scene are the people crossing the road, the road itself and the railings.
The giant Dawn Treader was a built on a gimbal to allow it to rock and shift as if on the high seas. Filming of exterior shots on board the ship took place at Wellington Point, Cleveland and the Gold Coast Seaway, Australia.
The movie makes extensive use of London’s vfx houses to create 1,400 special effects shots.
The Lone Islands are the first port of call for the Dawn Treader. They initially arrive at what appears to be a deserted fortress city. Some of the city was filmed on location in Australia and a partial set for many of the lower buildings was created on set. For shots of Ramandu Island, The Senate’s team replaced blue screens with a fully CG model complete with individual trees, waterfalls, clouds and ruins.
Eustace, Edmond and Caspian venture onto a barren, volcanic island -Goldwater island. The scenes use the digitally enhanced live-action photography at Stapleton Quarry in Queensland to extend the scope of the scenes. For example, digital mountainous topology is added to the sandy path and digital projected matte paintings and digital geometry are used to makes the golden canyon stretch for miles.
Huge spherical stones are scattered over the sandy beaches of the Duffer Island, where Lucy is abducted by invisible Dufflepuds who force her to enter the manor of the magician Coriakin to find a visibility spell.
The location is Koekohe Beach near Moeraki on New Zealand’s Otago coast. These Moeraki Boulders are actually concretions that have been exposed through shoreline erosion from coastal cliffs that back the beach.
The White Island provides a stunning setting for the Dark Island, lair of the mist and the nest of giant sea serpent, in the film. This island consists entirely of an active volcano. It is the most active volcano in New Zealand and is the most accessible active volcano in the world. The island is privately owned. However, there are regular boat and helicopter tours to the island from Whakatane.
South Stradbroke Island is used in the ending scene where Eustace, Lucy, Edmund, Caspian and Reepicheep met Aslan before a massive wave. Aslan opens a portal to send Lucy, Edmund and Eustace home.
